Rumble/Vibration

Hello, my wife and I test drove a 1991 300 TE 4matic this afternoon.
The price is very low and we suspect it's because of a growly/rumbly vibration that reaches it's peak at about 35 mph. The seller claims the car's been checked and no one can figure out the problem. He asking $2,800.
The balance of the car is in very good condition and the OD reads 183,000.
To me it sounds like a drive line problem. The rumble increases/decreases with the speed of the car with no change while shifting. The sound is reminicent of a noisy differential although the source is mid to front of car with a vibration.
I didn't have a manual so I couldn't identify the warning lights that were on. The warning light to the right of the (low windshield fluid) light was on as was the 'SRS" warning light. I know from my BMW that SRS is when the traction control isn't working. I suspect that all I've mentioned above has something to do with the 4matic. Any help will be appreciated. We like the car and can stand some repairs but dont want to get in too deep.
Thank you

Actually, the SRS light means there is a fault with the Airbag system. As for the rumbling, it could be a lot of things, ranging from bad wheel bearings to an out-of-balance driveshaft. Overall, whether a 183K-mile 4Matic with an iffy history is a good idea, well, you decide.

Those cars are notorious for going through transfer cases and front axles. Best to know what you're getting into before making a commitment.

You can have a pre-purchase inspection done and I am sure the reason for the noise can be pin-pointed. My humble opinion about this car is run away. Now and fast. The airbag thing especially troubles me. Just remember a cheap mercedes can end up being very expensive.
