The best procedure is what Ron recommended. This way you'll find if there is anything wrong with the gears and nylon strip that extends and retracts the mast. To do this you have to remove the antena assembly and open it like a clam. It's not that difficult.
However, there is an easier solution. Over time the grease inside the antena assembly dries (cakes). In addition, dust gathered by the mast when extended is carried inside when the mast retracts.
In my 300E the antena mast extends, but, it was so slow. I'm so lazy to dis-assemble the antena. So, I just sprayed the mast with WD 40 while it was extended. I turned the stereo on and off several times to make the mast extend and retract. Then, I wiped off the dirt on the mast and sprayed it again. I did this about 3 times.
I hope it works for you.
