That's for the newer models. It's a fixed timeline.

However the FSS system in the older models takes into account the things you mentioned above and calculates the date of when you should change it. Or it will just count down the 10k miles. It's in the manual somewhere.

I looked in the manual and could find nothing that would help us answer this question. I'd be grateful if anyone has the actual manual instructions on this.

What my SA told me several years ago was that if I plan to keep the car more than five years I might want to change the oil every 5K, but otherwise just follow the 10k recommendation.

Don't believe everything you think

Hmmm.....as you know, MLs are mainly POSs (not ours though of course), and there are plenty of people that have followed the FSS intervals, and are over 100k miles no problem.

However I do agree that as the vehicle gets older, the intervals should be shortened a little, but not too much. 3k just sounds like too much uneccessary work.

JMHO, but I have no problem with the FSS service interval.

That said, there is a decent amount of break-in during the first couple thousand miles. I'm still old-school enough to think that it's worth changing it out to get rid of it.

Thus, were it my car, I would change the oil and filter someplace in the 3k-4k range, and then follow the FSS thereafter, but even at that I'd follow a time interval and change it at least once a year even if the mileage interval hadn't passed.

Take care and enjoy the sweeeeet new ride,
Greg
