cruise gone wild

Please help if you can! I have inherited a 1990 300e, 3.0 automatic. The cruise control works great if you want to go 10mph faster and constantly change speeds every 2 seconds. It is almost as if it was engaging and then off and on and off and on, you get the idea. I would like to fix the problem myself but do not know where to start. I fear the dealer cost will be way out of my range, yet I feel obligated to keep the car in the condition my mother would have. Any help would be appreciated.

Hahaha! Mercedes cruise control is notorious for the very situation you describe. The problem is almost certainly a faulty cruise amplifier. The part is around $200 and you can easily replace it yourself. Welcome aboard, BTW!

Thank you for the reply. What is your opinion of buying a used part.

That isn't what I would do. Used is a good way to go for a lot of parts, but not those parts that have a very high failure rate. Of course, you could always get lucky...

Haha I know the problem you are talking about. I wouldent go with a used part on this one unless you want the same thing to be happening again.

Check these guys out....

http://gdl-online.com/begin1.html

They will repair and update your amplifier for around a hundred bucks. Comes with a 2 year warranty too.

You can buy the part from German Star if he carries it.

It is a very common problem, yes I agree, it looks like a failty cruise control module. Go to www.tempomat.tk and than the cost for repair are much lower than $200!
