Welcome to the forum.
MB engines have anti-knock sensors build in, so you can use regular in emergency without worry, but doing that on regular bases will lower the performance and shorten the engine life.
If you want that, you might want to buy Nissan instead.

You spent a lot of money on your Benz, the difference in cost per tank is minimal . . .run what the manufacturer recommends. Ethanol won't hurt - - -your car's sensors will adjust timing and spark for variations in fuel combustability.

Use premium.

If you want to use regular, buy a Chevy.

The owners manual states that not using premium gas could cause damage to the catalytic converter.

This has been discussed in the W124 forum as well as in other car fora.

Somebody went to the extent of pushing numbers and it seems like the difference between using regular and premium gas given the $0.20 average difference between the two boils down to only $250 per annum. Surely, you should be able to afford that amount without breaking the bank!

Otherwise, as the other guys said, go Geo Metro

Not knowing what kind of car the thread author has it’s impossible to respond with an accurate answer.

My 500 SEL runs fine on RUG. My 300 SE requires premium, however, and 10 percent ethanol is allowed.

That's considering all other things equal ?

I remember somebody reported 10% lower fuel efficiency on lower grade gas (engine have to adjust timing) so nothing comes free. I guess engine will have to run higher RPMs to compensate for lower power as well.

Manual says - premium - use premium.
