1998 320E 4Matic Wagon Reliability

I am looking at a 98 320E 4Matic wagon with 86k miles. It would be to replace 99 Saab 9-5 Wagon with about same miles. Want rid of Saab as it is unreliable and costing a lot in repairs; however, have no experience of 320E reliability and maintenance costs. Hard to believe could be as poor as Saab - but wary of trading one set of problems for another. Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Three letters-PPI. Spend the money and do a Pre-Purchase Inspection. Make sure you specify things you want done like a compression test. Have it done a shop that specializes in Mercedes. I cant speak to the specific model you mentioned. I have never owned one. As for prices-check out Autohaus AZ, benzbin etc to see what parts cost. If you a bit of a DIY'er you can save a ton of money. Repairs for mercedes at dealerships or even indy shops can be very expensive. You can learn a lot by checking out the forum specific to your model. There are a lot of people here that can give you good advice when it comes time for repairs.

Thanks Mike. PPI sounds like a good idea.
