Does buffing damage the paint?

Hi, I have a 1990 300E that I absolutely love. The inside and mechanics are in great condition. The paint has some surface scratches and other small marks on it and I'm wondering if I have it buffed out will it mess up the paint job? I suspect it has a layer of clear coat.

1986 560SEL (yes it has 19" rims, yes they're chick magnets, no I'm not a gangsta), 1990 300E w/ AMG motor (found brand new engine and transmission in abandoned warehouse!) and 1968 230 (old but dignified). Worked on 1982 280SL euro spec, 1982 380SL and 2007 E320.

It should have a clear coat. I would post in Car Care and Detailing for better answers. You can buff withotu damaging as long as you do it correctly I know.
