No oil pressure

I just purchased a 1993 190e 2.3L, while test driving it I noticed that the oil pressure gauge was at 0 and remained there during the test drive. I pulled over cut the car off and checked the oil dip stick only to discover that the oil was a quart and half low. I added the oil needed, but the gauge never moved from 0. Not knowing what to do at this point, I obviously still went through with the buying trasaction. The car belonged to an elderly woman and it has 90,000 miles on it. She told me if there was a problem with the car to just return it to her (she doesn't want to sell a problem car to anyone) Should I be concerned, and what are my options at this point? Keep the car and repair it? What is the cost? Is it difficult to repair myself?

Could be a bad gauge or a bad sending unit. Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

The sending unit fails frequently, the issue probably lies there.

How much is it to replace a bad sending unit and can I do it myself without a lot of engine tear down?

Remove the air filter housing, the oil pressure sending unit is near the oil filter. Hard to get to but not that bad. I would replace the oil level sending unit too as it should have showed low oil condotion. The oil level sending unit is on the pan left side near the oil drain plug......drain oil first!

Original unit can be expensive. For less, than $20 you can buy universal mechanical gauge from automotive story.
