I must just have a different eye.

In no particular order:

1: 2008 MB CL63 AMG [don't like the problems of the V12]
2: 1993 MB 500E [Best Sedan, period]
3: 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Coupe [Because]
4: 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet [with modern drivetrain]
5: 1973 Porsche 911RS [gotta have a real sports car]
6: 2006 Ferrari F430 Spyder F1 [some excess]

This way, or another I've got bored with each car sooner, or later.
When you buy high-performance car and you are reasonable guy, than you have a dilemma "why I spend $150 a week on gas, when I can drive luxury Mercedes diesel and spend only 30?"
I agree the fun is in the car itself. I have the best time on the ones that I have finished, or almost finished and realize that after 230,000 miles they are still monsters.

Right now I am starting on the body of a 68 MB 280SE Coupe. When done it will be like new, including modern suspension and drivetrain, possibly a Bluetec Diesel if I can find a totaled car in the time between now and drivetrain time. I think that will send a great statement.

Now I do have one question, how did you pass a BMW 750 with a 44hp VW Diesel. I had a 1980 Rabbit Diesel LS NEW and it could not pass anything except gas stations. 27 years later and its 48mpg highway/42mpg city is still pretty much at the top of the charts.

I have a buddy who has collected many European imports over the years. The one car he wishes he could have back is his 1980 Rabbit Pickup Diesel. That little smoker got 61 mpg once on a road trip. We had a good hard tailwind and made it 500 miles on something like $12 in fuel.

Its the man, that often counts, not the machine. I am proud owner of speeding ticket on CA freeway while driving that VW. My first own car was 21 HP Fiat126. I drove it for about 3 years before I've got something longer than 8 feet.
Those 3 years gave me a lot of practice how to use the available horsepower to full extend.
You know what steep downgrade means? "Acceleration time".

how did you fit inside that thing? did you remove the seat and sat on the floor?
you could probably leave a fiat 126 unlocked with keys inside for weeks in rome, and nobody would steal it.

The seat in Fiat126 was almost on the floor. I modify the seat "a bit" and had better legroom than in Hummer H2.
That left about 3/4" legroom for rear passenger, but I didn't have them too many. Than hot item on it was heater control. The level for opening the duct was under rear seat so with a chick on rear seat the driver had to stick his hand between her legs.
Did I mention the car was lot of fun?
