Ironically, she didn't particularly like the attention that came with having the marque named after her. If I recall the story correctly, she died relatively young after a couple of failed marriages.

For those who don't know the story, she was the daughter of the first distributor of Daimler vehicles. (I don't recall his name; I think he was Italian.) He agreed to sell the Daimlers to his wealthy friends in exchange for having her name on all of the cars. After he had a falling out with Daimler and Maybach, they decided to keep the name because it had become such an integral part of their marketing.

Mercedes-The name of Emil Jellineck's daughter. Emil Jellineck was a Jewish banker from Austria who financed Diamler's racing efforts at the turn of the century, and subsequently earned the right to name the cars.

Jellinek was born in Leipzig in the south-east of Germany, the son of Dr Adolf Jellinek (sometimes known also as Aaron Jellinek). His father was a well-known Czech-Hungarian rabbi and intellectual in the Jewish collective around Leipzig and Vienna. Jellinek's mother Rosalie was also a preaching rabbi. He had two brothers, both of whom achieved fame: Max Hermann Jellinek as a linguist, and Georg Jellinek as an international law teacher. His sisters were Charlotte and Pauline.

He was Austrian Council general in Nice.

Later hechanged his last name to Jellineck-Mercedes. Probably the only case where father got his child's name as a last name.

Mercedes Jellinek died at 39 from bone cancer, alone. Her younger sister died just 3 years ago, in 2003, at 96.

I also believe that one of the reasons for naming the car Mercedes is because Daimler was registed in England as a company or trademark and they could not use the name in Germany. Here is the website of the Daimler cars, currently owned by Jaguar. http://www.keycast.com/keycast/daimler/

never mind..I think you are right. Daimler-Benz merger did not occut until 1926, in 1919 they decided to combine efforts and new car was named Mercedes-Benz.

The in Hamburg to English parents born Frederick Simms obtained the rights for England to the Daimler patents and name from his Friend Gottlieb Daimler. Panhard had the rights for France. Emil Jellinek needed another name to sell the car in France, and used his daughters name Mercedes. We have many former posts abouts this in the archive.

This really means nothing, but my younger sister had a friend named Mercedes in my town. She pronounced it Mer' ce des, not Mer ce' des.

Isn't that a great picture/drawing, and the only one a search has found. Presently being used in a B class members avatar.

It looks like a work by Albrecht Durer.
