Worthless MB OEM keys

What's the deal with these crappy keys? I've had three break in the last three years...this last one lasted 7 months. This is stupid. I had one key for all the years I had my 220D, one key for the life of my '81 330D, one key for the life of my '86 190E (need I go on?).
I'm going to write to MB and tell them what crap they are sending us. In the meantime, I'm going to take the rest of the cheap-ass plastic off and fashion a lovely exotic hardwood fob/top like we all once talked about.
For some reason this really ticked me off tonight.
Back in the day, MB would have made good on these dumb keys. Now-a-days, they will probably just do the electronic equivelent of wadding up my letter, laughing and tossing the wad in the trash.

And I am pretty sure that he is talking about the plastic head that goes on the key... yes, they break, thats why they make replacement heads... $10.00 at my dealer AND at Performance Products.

If you are talking about the steel, well, I would talk to the dealer about that and see if they cant replace it for you at no charge.

But, if it's just the plastic piece, buy another one.

How can you break the plastic piece so frequently?? I have the same plastic on my key for years and nothing has happened...You either turn it wayy too hard or have huge hands.

That's my point...if someone has a key they have had for a good long time, it seems to be more robust. Three years ago, when I bought this '77 300D off of some guy in San Diego, he just has some hardware store key as an ignition key. When I got the car home, I went down to the dealer and ordered a replacement master key. It lasted about a year. I then ordered another schluesselkopf (keyhead) and it lasted a little over a year. I then ordered another master key so I would have two, and the plastic head on the new master key lasted seven months before the plastic cracked.
I took the key down to the dealer and they gave me a new schluessekopf and told me there have been several of us "vintage guys" in here lately with busted plastic heads...but they have been guys that have gotten their keys lately. Older keys don't seem to have the problem.

Over the course of time, I have never had to buy another key for any of the other four MBs I've owned.

Well AZ Bob, if the only thing that got me mad about MB cost of key heads, dont buy a newer car. Go have someone weld a washer on it.

I don't like the key head of the W123. The master key head breaks so easily. However, the valet key is still original and its not falling apart.
