Need Opinion

Ok. Here's the deal. I'll be 17 in just a few months which marks the biggest moment of my entire life, my first car.

I've been a car nut my whole life so don't think I dunno crap lol, I do do my HW.

Anywho, so far, I have chosen a Mercedes-Benz to be in my top choices of cars to look at.

So here's what I've been considering.

My first choice is a V8 W126, or a 1986-1991 560SEL/SEC, or 420SEL.

My knowledge of this car is that it's extremely safe, very very reliable (the last reliable Benz before the Benz = problematic era), practical and not as expensive to maintain as the newer ones (as I've heard from another BenzForumer, that parts are relatively cheap and affordable right now), and the M117 V8 isn't insanely fast and a rocket ship, but still powerful. Price range, for a good example of the SEL, $3500-10k, and slightly more expensive for an SEC (I have a good family friend who is a wholesaler and can get me one at book value, if not cheaper)

Here's what I've also been thinking about.

I've been thinking either a W140 S500, or S420. Now, from what I've heard, the W140s were somewhat problematic, or at least the earlier ones are and they were built at the climax of Benz's decline in reliability. And I've noticed, the residual values and going prices aren't that far from the W126 for a decent example, especially since I have a wholesaler friend. But, I've heard the car is more problematic, but, on the upside, it's faster, it's more luxurious, it's more modern.

Or, I've been thinking of considering a W124, particularly an E420, E500 (VERY RARE, yes I know and quite more expensive), 500E (look in the previous parenthesis lol), 400E, or an E320 I would not mind, but would prefer a V8.

I'm not as knowledgeable with the W124 as I am with the W140 or the W126 (the car I'm most knowledgeable about). So I need your guys' advice, which one out of the three Benzes would be best suited for a person of my kind?

I am aware that all Euro cars, especially Germans like to burn holes of all kinds in your wallet when something goes wrong, and so far, the W126 seems like the best choice for me and probably the most affordable, in relative to the newer ones.

The rest of my cars include E32, E38 BMW 7er, E34 5er, E31 8er, Infiniti Q45t 98-01, Lexus SC400, LS400, VW B5/B5.5 Passat V6 4MOTION or W8 4MOTION, Acura TL Type-S, CL Type-S. But the one car that is on the top of my list is the W126, and has been for quite a while. You don't have to worry about the other cars in my list, but it's just to give you an idea.

Duh, forgot to post my budget: $3500-$13k MAX., for room for the W140 and the W124.

I would say $3500-$10k for the W126. I know I'm going to save room for parts and repairs.

First let me say this, who ever told you w126 parts are cheap is dead wrong. They are great cars, but expensive. I have a few questions for you. The biggest one is do you have a job? If your answer is your parents are going to pay for stuff-wait and earn a mercedes when you are older. In addition to expensive parts, It costs me $50 to $60 to fill up half a tank of gas on my 300SEL. You should check on insurance costs as well. Even if you are not the primary driver on the policy, the price will be up there. You should explore these issues and read the FAQ on the w126 forum. I have other thoughts, but I have to run. Meeting some guys to drop an engine out of carrera today!!!

I will be paying for part of the car while parents pay the remainder, probably at least half.

I will be paying for parts, repairs and gas. I read that they were cheapER, in relative to what they were earlier.

I think from that, they were going in the direction of the W124 was in production until 1995 when the W126 ended in 1991. So, therefore the W124 WAS the last true Mercedes-Benz by the standards set mainly by the W126 and W124.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but thats what I got from it being a 124 and 126 lover.

From my experience, I was dead set on getting an 81-85 300SD because my 1st car was a '77 240D and I loved the diesel. My dad has owned a number of 1987-1991 420SEL's and 560SEL's... as well as a couple 300E's and a 400E (he changes cars like they are socks)... I bought my 81 300SD and drove it for a week and loved it... except for the oil leaks... and the fact that it was massive and slow... so I sold it back to the friend I bought it from and set on a quest for a 300E or CE or 400E as I like the smaller body of the 124s... found my 300CE... gas, it cost me about 75.00 to fill the 126 (never got to see the actual mileage driving it a week) but the 124 costs me around 50.00 to fill with PREMIUM and I am getting between 25 and 30mpg (a lot better than the 15-20 you will get out of a 126 V8) The car is smooth as the 126's with a little more driver connection I feel.

Insurance on the 126 was 95.00 a month for full coverage and roadside assistance (not owning a car that old without that) AND the 10 year newer 124 is 85.00 a month without changing ANYTHING on the policy.

The only thing that I was going to have to fix on the 126 that I got a quote on (outside of the 2,000.00 oil leaks(6)) was the window regulator... drivers side was going to be 400.00 installed... I have to replace the same regulator in my CE drivers side and it will be 250.00 installed from the same shop. Thats the only repair/parts comparison I have so far.

Hope this helps you a little, and it's exciting that you want an attainable Benz at your age and you are actually going to achieve that goal. Let us know what you end up getting and good luck with your search!!

You seem to have your sights fixed and I respect and admire you for that! Since you've asked for our opinions, here's mine. Between you present choices, I would go for the W124! We've had several of these through the years and some of them were handed down to my children... and they all enjoyed it very much. I can cite a lot of advantages for the W124 but I wouldn't enumerate them now just so I won't bore people (Email me privately if your're interested). We've also had a V8 W126 and for one, the gas was just too much! Repairs were not any cheaper! Repair labor rates for a Mercedes is the same whatever model it is.

I have a suggestion for you tho. Try looking into a 1986 or 1987 W201 190E-16V. It's rare but it's a fun thing to drive. Look for one that has a manual tranny. I am sure you will enjoy it. Just make sure you get a good one without problems. Since your upper limit budget is $13K, you will not have problems getting a good one. Just be patient.

By the way, with your $13K budget, you might just be able to get a 500E! But when it comes to fun, to me, a "stick" W201 190E-16V is the better choice, specially at your stage in life. I tell you this based on experience.
