I don't remember hearing that story, but those babies were HAND-made, I'm positive about that.
The factory tours were not operating, and I saw absolutely nothing on the inside. And, would you believe that the MB museum is close, but having no interest in them at the time, I didn't even know it existed somewhere around Stuttgart.
That's funny about "or it owned me, I'm not really sure". Those were some pretty high maintenance cars, but I loved them anyway. Do you remember the Bosch platinum-tip spark plugs ($8 each back THEN), without which, they would run like crap?
Congrats on your former Porsche - the S was a hot runner in those days. My 911T had the least HP - then came 911E and then the 911S (highest).
