Angry Electronic Nightmare

In June of 2005 I purchased a 2001 C320. The vehicle had only 23000 miles and , being a little suspicious, I requested and got a Carfax report that listed only routine services. I have been to the service department at least once a month for the past year with ESP problems, Central Locking problems, CLimate control problems etc. I purchased an extended warranty that never really covers any of the things with which I've had trouble. The vehicle rides beautifully and is really clean but it is an electronic nightmare. I replaced one remote key three months ago and today I took the car in again because the other remote stopped functioning. The remote is sending a signal but the car doesn't always respond. Rather than replace the key for another $125., I made an appointment for another diagnostic test next week. That pro My wife and I bought the car for her use and all I have heard from her are wisecracks about the "Fine, precision German engineering". I've stopped defending MB because she's right. I put money up front to keep the monthly payment down and recently put new Michelin tires on it so trading it in would be a big financial hit. Does anyone have any info on this particular model or is Car and Driver right about the MB and BMW being the least dependable cars?

C&D is right. Did you do your research regarding MB and how they do in terms of quality and reliability? I can tell you that it is getting better, starting with the new W221 S-Class. Doing better a little bit at a time.

I drive 99 E320 what from I know is the same drive-train and never had any problems in 2 years.
Electronics are usually the most reliable parts in the car. Sensors like to give up on occasions, but sealed computer module suppose outlast several cars.
You are not too specific about the problems, but I've seen lot of cars messed up by mechanics. It is just human, that when you repair one thing, you push wires on other, or leave the plugs loose, so few days later the thing require new repair.
How much trust you have in your mechanic?

Lightbulb E320 nightmare

I just bought a 2001 E320 a month ago (certified pre-owned so I also have an MB extended warranty). I am therefore interested in your issues.

First of all, you might also post this on the "W210 E Class" forum - just scroll down through the forums until you see it.

Carfax reports are indicative of the condition of a used car, but sometimes don't tell the whole story (I learned this the hard way with an earlier Benz - it turned out to have had front-end damage that did NOT appear on the report). Any service done at authorized MB dealers should be included on that. Joe's Garage - pretty unlikely.

I didn't read the fine print on my warranty - I'm beginning to feel a little uneasy now

Mine came with 2 keys, and 1 of them doesn't always work correctly. The little indicator light lights when I push the control buttons, but sometimes nothing happens. Before doing anything else, I thought I'd replace the batteries (takes 2 2025 watch batteries - WalMart sold me a pair for $5.95 - I think the MB dealers charge at least 2X that).

As far as german engineering, I think that is pretty sound, but I've read that they can't produce reliable micro-processors (most people call these the computer).

Please keep us informed on either of these forums, and Good Luck with your Mercedes!

Musikmann, actually he should post in the W203 C-Class forum.

Let me add to my previous post. German engineering is the best in the world. It may suck when it comes to reliability and quality, but in terms of safety and innovation, they're the best.

Red face Another couple of things

In my opinion, your C320's previous owner might not have driven it enough. 6000 miles per year makes it sound like a nice day Sunday drive-only car. However, in my experience, it seems like the mileage is THE MOST important determining factor in a used MB's cost/value.

You stated it is your wife's car. Not that this has anything to do with the electronics, but MBs don't like to sit around idle, nor do they like to be "pussy-footed". These vehicles are meant to be driven, and driven HARD!

Welcome to the forum,
M

Was that a misspelling of "asianal," or a Freudian slip?

Don't believe everything you think
