I tried purchasing a G4 laptop on ebay about two years ago now and wasn't sure about the transaction, but the "buyer" had a good history and ebay sent me a gurantee letter saying that they would back up the transaction if it went sour. Turns out the sellers account was hacked and I lost 1400 bux. Ebay never helped and didn't even return calls or answer calls. Their word has no value if they send me essentially a contract vowing to refund me if my transaction fails, yet they vanish into cyberspace when it comes time to utilize those services they promised.

Buyer beware can only be said to a point. If you have a company that provides a service and goes beyond that and promises to assist you, then their service is hijacked, you loose money, and they don't give a damn... I consider that breaching a contract or fraud on their behalf. Just like everything in cyberspace, there is no accountablity, I thought that an organization that pays taxes and employs people would have to be held accountable... guess I don't understand the way business really works... pie in the sky .... and consumers prepare to eat shit
FUCK EBAY.

I told you a bad story, but here is a good one with a bad start for a change.
Keep in mind that eBay is low cost advertisement for many legal businesses.

I won an auction for a nice Audi, but after Carfax double check it showed an accident. The seller provided CarFax with Wrong Vin.

Seller said no problems, Sorry, How can I help you?
Next week he got similar Audi listed, I called him and asked if he can sell it for similar price.
Dealer said, YES, double check for problems and I am 3 years later a ahappy camper.

There alot of dead bidders on eBay and some sellers appreciate a real buyer once in a while.
Talk to the seller, test drive it, don't leave deposit and buy roundtrip ticket.

Everybody wants to make money and every car has a price, go talk, neogtiate, take chances, but don't be stupid.

In all honesty, if you have similar car locally negotiate and pay some extra.
Sometimes it pays to take a look at the overpriced car of the fellow forum members. At the end everybody wins.
Try to fly far away to see what that low price deal look likes and than realise the obvious, nothing as it seems.

Cheers

Ebay is advising using escrow accounts for any bigger transaction.
You acted against their advise and now you blame them? Maybe it is time to grow up?
I had one transaction, when a car dealer wanted me to to pick up Mercedes with bad transfer case. I was able to check it over the phone and didn't have to fly to find it out. Ebay promptly refunded me $500 deposit minus $100 deductible, that my credit card covered. I consider that much better insurance, than from local used car dealer.

I've had nothing but positive Ebay transactions. The most was buying an item at $1000. I've looked at cars in person, that had been listed on Ebay, and they all looked "as described."

You hear about the bad ebay encounters all the time. But you don't hear about the millions of good ones. Just take your time, have good communication with the seller, and voice any concerns.

Its the local used car lot dealers that appear to be trying to scam me the most. They pretend not to know anything about cars when I ask them why the engine's smoking or the front brakes thumped when I test drive or why the car putts when in low RPM's. They all say a tune-up will fix all of that. Then why didn't they just do a simple tune-up if I was willing to buy the car?
