Question W? Wxy? Wyx? Wxx?

Hello, I decided to post a new thread in order to ask a question:

What is with the W210 and the other codes of Mercedes Benz? Of what I see, those W codes represent a model each of them. What is the description for these codes? Did MB invented them? What is the criterion of choosing a W code for a specific model?

Later edit: I just realised that I should have opened this thread in the very above area of this forum, the one called "General Mercedes-Benz". Maybe a moderator will move this thread where it belongs.

From what I see, all MB that have more than 2 seats start with W (for Wagon, I guess). The 2-seaters start with R (like R129, R230, R170, R171 - Roadster). Some likes to call their coupes C (like C215) but the official name still W215.

W is the beginning of the chassis codes for the models. Almost all of them are W---. There is the R--- which is mainly for roadsters/'convertibles' like the SLK and SL. The C--- right now is for the CLS, and sometimes the CL is referred to as C215, but the official one is W215.

All other ones are W---. Sedans, SUVs, wagons... Like W164 M-Class, W220 S-Class, W211 E-Class, etc.

the new GL is an X164 (to somehow differentiate it from the ML, as they share the same basic 164 chassis)
