I think... they used money to buy the comments and titles, specially Hyundai. There are corruptions, "under-table" money, and "black" accounting which have been investigated by their countries.

"In the eyes of consumers, design flaws can have as much of an impact on their perceptions of quality as can a defect,"
A BMW spokesman attributed the large number of design-related issues to the amount of advanced technology in the company's vehicles.
We have been through that before.
Just because average Joe can't tell cruise control from turn signals in Mercedes, doesn't mean the car is bad.

Could it be that as one result of the merger Chrysler quality improved while Mercedes quality declined? Teutone
That could be one possible explanation.
Tho other would be, that Chrysler makes the same cars for 20 years with minimal changes. They finally learned how to make the door close without leg help.
Mercedes is adding new gizmos almost every year, so owners (listen carefully -here comes the hard part) have to LEARN !!!
