My 99 E430 can't work with newer Chaimberlain garage door opener.
After programming the button on the mirror, it works. If I used the Chaimberlain remote control to open/close the garage door, the mirror button stops working.

Thank you Kajtek1. That's exactly what I needed to get our 2003 C230 to work. You rock!

Don't know if this is per manual, but this is my experience.
First you have to make sure your car transmits right frequency. You might be lucky that it does, but to make sure -program the car by holding the button till it start blinking and than pres original opener remote next to it.
Now once the car emits the correct frequency -you can hit the programing button on the opener and once you press the button on the car remote it should work immediately.
