Smile W124 / 300E 191K miles - should I buy?

Am looking at buying a 87' W124 / 300E (for $2400). Car is in excellent condition with full service history/books. BUT it has 191K miles on it. Am asking any experienced M-B owners out there if they think I'm asking for trouble?? Many thanks.

even with full service history/books, have a pre-purchase inspection done. just because the mileage is low (~ 10K miles/years) you will need to replace some parts due to its age.

thx

I bought a 87 300SL with 24,500miles on the odo. I got a good pre-purchase check, but still found after purchase I had to spend a lot of cash on the fuel injection and a new fuel tank. This was due to the low milage. Water contaminated fuel sat in the tank for long time and caused rust, which flaked of as I drove it, stuffing the fuel injection.

I learned, don't assume anything, low or high milage.

Get everything checked if possible, even the fuel tank

Andrew.

Yes, A PPI is a pre-purchase inspection. I am sure there is a good mercedes shop in your area. If you are not sure of one, post a message on benzworld and someone from your area can point you in the right direction. My suggestion is that you do not have it done at the dealership. My experience with ppi's and dealerships is that they do very little checking for the money. Absolutely do not do it at the shop that the seller has had his work done. They have a relationship with the seller and will want his continued business. Make sure you find out expectly what is being done for the ppi (compression test, road test etc).
If you have not already, do a search of the w124 forum or post a message asking about common problems with this line. You should have all the information when you do to buy....or bargin.

I don't think so. I will have paraphraze MBZER:

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap mercedes.

A ppi is an insurance policy-nothing more. You don't have to do it. I personally would not buy a car (especially a mercedes) without having it checked out.
