I agree completely Michael. I did the same thing that e taylor is contemplating.

I kept watching the local MB dealer's used lot for a "bargain". When I saw a couple for less than $15,000 I bought my E430 for $12,900 (118k miles). This is still my "entry level" Mercedes.

The only thing they told me was that the sunroof didn't work, and since that was a $1,000 job, they had it priced to sell. It didn't take long for a few expensive probems to arise, PLUS, I discovered that it had been hit (but pretty well repaired) in the front end - this did not appear in the CarFax report

I now have more money invested in the vehicle than it's worth as a trade-in. I also will never be able to sell it outright and recover all of that money.

With that said, I still love my Benz! I'm just going to keep driving it for a while with my fingers crossed.

Bottom line: Be prepared to keep spending money on it. I hope you don't have to, but I sure did and still am (AC is the most recent issue)

Thank you all so much. I have also looked at the W124 forum. I am having the car inspected. The only problem I can find is that the AC has not been converted to r134. I live in LA so I need AC. Is this mega-expensive?
thanks again!

I had my w126 retrofitted to r134a in Michigan. It cost between $200 and $300. I don't know what if would cost in LA. I'm sure if you did some calling around they would give you some quotes.
BTW, for those of you in Michigan: I had the retrofit done at Al's Radiator in Grand Blanc. Don't be fooled by the name. They may have started out as just a radiator shop many years go, but now they service just about everything. They have even worked on my porsche and several others in the area. If any of you need to have your AC done, I highly recommend them. I was very pleased with their work and service.

Hi I always remember an old MBs mechanic telling me that an old low mileage MB is not necessarily a good MB for it depends on how the car was driven. By way of example he advised it was bad news for a MB with a high compression engine to be regularly driven only short distances such as to a local shop(or church!!!) & back home for its engine would frequently be running cold. He pointed to the example of reports of some MBs (frequently cabs) achieving in excess of 1/2 million miles without requiring any major mechanical attention which he put it down to the engines always running "hot" & with recommended oil/filter changes & even at intervals less than those suggested by the manufacturer. As to my own experience I acquired a 89 300CE 24 valve(with books) about 12 months ago after PPI by a MB/BMW "specialist factory trained " independent mechanic(the old mechanic had retired) who advised that it was a sound car on which I would not have to spend any real money for at least 12months, its relatively low mileage was of no concern & a very minor engine vibration which I noted while test driven at 60mph would be cured once the car(mainly driven within city precincts) was driven non stop for 150+ miles. Unfortunately within 4 months car was difficult to start cold -diagnosis rotor worn ( now I know to be a common fault) & replacement of all spark plug & new engine mounts ( not cheap when compared to purchase price of the car) & some minor work on gearbox. I agree with Michaels comments. But as the 300CE it is a lovely drivers car my only regrets are that I did not negotiate harder on price & did not get 2 PPIs. Hope this is of help & I hope that you get to follow your "star".
