Why are people bothering to read magazines like car and driver, etc? They are just big advertising brochures for their biggest sponsers.

Just go watch Top Gear or something. I think they only reviewed one Lexus and said it was absolute rubbish.

Top Gear

Here is what TGear thinks about Lexus, excerpt:

"Aygo’s top honour was the crowning glory among a series of Top Gear gongs to set the mantelpiece groaning. In addition to the Car of the Year award, Aygo also picked up a “Jeremy” as Best Small Car, while Toyota’s sister brand, Lexus, marched off with Best Executive/Luxury Car for the new IS 250.

In the recent Top Gear survey Lexus recently also took awards for the RX 300 and IS models in the 4x4/SUV and Executive/Luxury categories respectively as well as winning the overall manufacturer category."

Can't find old topics, but few months ago one member posted here pictures from accident between ML320 and Lexus 430 (?)
Mercedes and heavier Lexus met at about 30 MPH in off-center head on collision.
While 3 Lexus occupants waited for firefighters to cut them off the truck and couple of weeks at hospital, the ML owner jumped out and made detailed pictures.
My wife short time later had been rear ended by BMW X5. While BMW was swept from the street by tow truck driver, she drove her ML320 home.
Would it surprise you, that we bough another ML55?
BTW my son still drives totaled ML320.

Did not read the CR article, but have learned from years of experience that my own experience almost never agrees w/ CR ratings. In fact, I have found that their top ten, in any category, is likely to be my bottom ten. I don't know how they do it, but I swear they invert all of their data so that the ratings are exactly the opposite of was actually found. In short, THEY SUCK!

Don't believe everything you think

CR is based on customers feedback. Lot of decisions are based on "tradition" not on actual value.
"My grandpa drove a Chevy, my father drove a Chevy and I am going to drive a Chevy" is very common logic.
When you travel through the states, you might notice, that MB are very popular in CA, some in NY and Florida, but are placed next to the space shuttle in Nebraska, or Wyoming.
What would you expect those folks in central states to write?
You know that in those states the most popular vehicle model is a pickup truck? How many pickups MB makes?

Good point. and one of the reasons still to own a german car over a japanese car. my car is more expensive to repair when it breaks. it breaks about as often as other cars of it's age i think. no moreoften, no less often. but i feel a lot safer in my German convertable than any type of car of japanese origin.

Has anybody here actually contributed to or been asked questions for a CR?

I prefer the reviews done by Road & Track or Car & Driver - they know cars! The next time I need a toaster or a microwave, I might take their advice.

In general, I think they are a good organization; in fact I used to contribute to their non-profit foundation, Consumers Union. But I think you have to take them with a grain of salt sometimes.

One example: a sister of mine bought their most highly-rated clothes washer or dryer. She had nothing but trouble with it. Did she get a lemon, or were they wrong? I think probably a lemon, but nothing in this world is 100%.
On the flipside, CR has been ga-ga over Volkswagen's Passat over the past few years and has been recommeding it over the Japanese Accord or Camry in their comparison reports. They also have been consistently stating that the E320, S Class and even the ML are the best riding and handling cars in their class, much better than Lexus. So they really want to give these cars the thumbs up, but are held back by bad reliability feedback from their readers. That's the data that you have to take with a grain of salt. Their reliability categorys don't show the details. If you just have a dashboard bulb serviced, it's considered an "electrical problem" and that model gets dinged in that category.

Yeah, if you are a subscriber, you get a chance to fill these out each year. They just have you list your model and year, and check off if you had any problems in the last year for the realibillity categories (Engine, Cooling, Electrical, Body Hardware, Transmission, etc). Unfortunately, they only care about the last seven years, so older cars stats are not compiled.

"Interpretation" of statistics is everything.
We bought our ML in the second year of production. They had lot of "red tape" because cruise control level is .... too close to the blinkers level, the doors locked them-self, it made some squeaks and so on. Few months later my friend bought Pathfinder, what was big competition for ML. The Pathfinder was offering several less inches in leg room, was bottoming out on freeway bumps, noisily and burned more fuel.
Bottom line -that was fully acceptable in Nissan, so Pathfinder had almost 100% of customer satisfaction, while ML lot of complains.
