Power Steering noise.

Hi all,

My power steering is making a nasty groining noise each time the wheel is turned. Anyone had this before? what is it? how is it fixed?

My car is a 1990 R129 500SL. but as it's a general problem i posted here.

Can anyone help, Thanks.

Yea fluid, the pump can develop a leak and let it drain, the thing is that the leak can be so small that you may just have to fill the fluid at each service.

Take it to Coutts in New Market adn see if you can get free advice, that and their mints are the only free things I have ever got from Mercedes.

Sounds like the fluid level is low. W 126 tend to develope slow leaks form the large O - rings above the drivers side motor mounts. Teutone (aka Horst K)

Looks like the concensus is the fluid level. I better double check that i checked the right one! Thanks for replies.

NZ Benz - Nice to hear from a local. There only seems to be the one in the SL forum from Wellington. Coutts may be worth a shot. FYI I have found EC Mercedez on Hobson Street to be good and a bit cheaper. I have no complaints about Autohaus either. I'll let you know what i find.

I am in Dunedin for uni at the moment and found that the guys at Armstrong down here are not as helpful and also have no free mints . There are a few locals in the forums here.

I just opened up the reservoir. it is only about half full (just below the yellow plastic thing). It is also a dark brown colour which surprises me. i would have thought it should be light brown or red. And there is signs of slow leakage on the outside bottom of the reservoir.

What colour liquid is yours. is it all the way to the top filled?

So... does the fluid need to be replaced. if so does it just drain out somewhere or do i need to bleed the system of air like with brakes. Is it a home job or a service job? I will do the job myself if it is not too in-depth.

Anyway, here is a picture of insode my reservoir.

Problem solved thanks

Thanks for the help.

the problem was fixed by simply topping up the power steering fluid. i didn't actually think that getting rid of the noise would be that simple. anyway, poured some Prestone PS fluid with Stop Leak into it. immediatly stopped the noise. i put enough in to come about 2/3 of the way up the yellow plastic thing.
