Unhappy No light on Instrument Cluster, Dash,!!!

Hi, I have a '89 230ce, a few months ago while the car was running, all of a sudden the whole instrument panel went dark, the lights in the middle (heating and switches) leading down to the window switches all went out! I cant even see the gears!

I have spoken to various mercedes garages, all of them not knowing the problem, I have checked the fuse in the fuse box, which seems fine.

There is also another fuse which sits behind the instrument cluster, on one side behind the temperature/oil cluster. Its a small red push in/pull out type. I replaced it but with no joy!

Im now really stuck and not sure what to do.. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Buy a 5$ voltage tester in radioshack/home depot/Loewe's - and start tracing lighting circuit to see where you have power and where it disappears

You can't tell if a fuse is okay by looking at it in the box. Take it out and see if it falls apart. After 15 years, it's not a bad idea to just replace your fuses. If your car has a dimmer switch on the dash that is also the trip meter reset button, that is often the cause. Jiggle it back and forth and see if you get any lights.

Try giving your instrument panel a good whack with your palm. My instrument panel lights worked after I did that to my 1997 E 300 Diesel.

I guess this one still has an "old-fashioned" rheostat, could start with the multimeter from there.
