While my absense has likely given it away, I figured I'd put some closure on the subject. The result was bitter-sweet however, I decided to sell my 400E and pick another BMW.

I'm now driving a 1997 BMW 528i. I must say I do miss the power and lovely sound of the Mercedes V8, however the over all feel of the BMW is just more to my liking.

Thank you to those who replied. I have moved on and will now be hiding out on the BMW boards. Best of luck to all! *GO KIMI*

Nice 528i. I've always liked the E39.

Well said offroadwarrior. A thinly veiled attempt to poke at Mercedes. I'm 6ft and cannot get comfortable in the 3 series. Far too cramped and short of legroom. I loathe the ride. Harsh, jiggly, lousy on bumps, ridges and so on. And widely criticised. The 5 series is a bit better but still not up to Mercedes, the silkiest virtually perfect combination of comfort with refinement allied to fine roadholding. If you want to drive like a hyper-ventilating teenager a harsher ride will allow that but at awful cost to comfort and refinement. No you can't make a Merc feel like a BMW. It's too good to be made that poor.

BMW's have lots more accidents because there are lots of silly people who think cars are about 'sport'. On the track, of course. But on the road, driving is more about staying alive and helping to ensure others do too.

BTW if you lower the suspension and fit low profile tyres you will ruin the silky ride and drag it down to BMW standards which would be a shame.

nice E39! i have a 540i/6 and a 93 W201 Sportline. your first impressions are very... well... different.

the E30 and the E36's are small cars. You might have had a better "feel" of a MB if you went with a 190E with suspension set for the twisties.

The best way of comparing my 540 with the 190 is:
the 540 demands you attention around a turn because the torque and power in the M62 is so overwhelming, you WILL need to pay all your attention to control it. can be fun. the 190 will ask for your attention because it'll ripe around a turn just as well but it doesn't have the power to get out of hand so it feels like it would ask you to push it more then to hold it.

i honestly enjoy driving the 190 so much but it just lacks the power the 540 offers. it's a nimble car and makes turns with little to no effort. in the 540, you feel the size. you know you're in a bigger car.

one's a scaple, the other is a chainsaw. both gets the job done. one is just an overkill.

93 W201 Sportline (40K miles) SOLD...

I have the 300E Sportline [with new suspension] and a BMW Coupe that my wife drives and have had the E36 Coupe that he talked about before her Coupe. At 6' 230# I was very comfortable in the E36 on trips. I prefer the Benz but on several occasions we took the Bimmer if it was a Bimmer event.

As for tweaking a Benz to enhance handling to get to Bimmer level, it is hard to get a 3500 pound car to feel like a 3000 pound car but by lowering the car with H&R springs and using Bilstein Shocks and 500E sway bars and bushings you can come very very close. My little restomod biz has done 15 cars in the past two years and found that from Twin Turboed 300SELs to Blown 500E's you really can enhance performance without negatively affecting comfort and ride. The dB rating on my Twin Turbo 300SEL which went from 177 to 340 WHP is quieter than stock.

The car runs on 17" AMGs with Mich. Pilots which are very smooth on both highway and street.
