ML running boards-how to remove?

I am looking at a very nice 05 350 but it has the limited edition running boards that i don't like. I have gotton a few opinions but not from anyone that has actually removed them. Are they easy to remove?, will there be any paint work to be done or new parts to get ? Thanks for your input in advance
