What is the most reliable mercedes?

Hi Everyone. I'm new to the forum and new to the world of Mercedes. I'm looking to get a Merc as a daily driver, and I need something that can endure long drives through the desert and lots of mileage without breaking down or constant headache repairs. I currently have an older toyota as a daily beater, which has been reliable like sunshine, but i'm looking for something more comfortable, classier, and more luxurious. I'm really interested in benz's that are 1989 or older, particularly the W126 or W116 cars. I don't really know much about Mercedes Benz, but I hear that the older models are built with higher quality and craftsmanship than the models of today. Not to mention, they also run forever. Just looking for some suggestions on what model would suit me best. Thanks in advance.

William

RE: What is the most reliable mercedes?

In my limited experience they were very durable and well built up to 94-95, but from 93-95 the wirning harnesses were made with horrible insulation and caused a lot of grief to people that had to have them replaced.
Our 1990 W124 300e is amazing. It is leaps beyond the quality of our ML and my brothers W211.

Forgot to mention in a recent online car magazine review the W124 was considered one of the best all around cars made in history.

RE: What is the most reliable mercedes?

I'd vote for W123, W124, and W126.

And I'll bet you that the 123s win out due to less complexity. After all, that's what's killing the new ones. OTOH, the 123s are older. YMMV.

I think 300D's are indestructible!

Hi there, any of the before mentioned would do nicely with the W 126 the roomier choice. You omitted a location in your profile. Without it, the desert you mention might require anything from the special gulf package for the UAE to a regular functioning A/C. If you decide on an MB check out well maintained ones and have all mechanics checked as well as for an A/C leak. Can be a very expensive fix. A cheap MB often turns out to be a very expensive one. Just my 10 pfennig. Cheerio, Horst K

RE: What is the most reliable mercedes?

w124s are bomb proof so to speak.

mine is unbelievably reliable, it gets a pasting regularly - (once she has warmed up of course) and iv had her 6 / 7 months and nothing has gone wrong. i had a vw corrado before and every week there was a new problem.

from what i can gather, the w124 300s and w123 300D's are the best

RE: What is the most reliable mercedes?

I vote for the w126, but the 300D's seem like they never die. My uncle bought his new and still has it. It does sound a bit like a diesel truck though. The w126 are bigger. My gaser is pretty quite an comfy. Either way, you most likely will have to have the AC retrofitted to R134a. It will save you some money if you can find one in which the conversion has already been done.
