can I replace my seats?

I have a 1985 Mercedes 500SEL and I love it to death, but the driver's seat is shot. I was thinking of trying to find the front seats from a junked, later-model (say, a 2000-era S500) and putting them in there, instead of replacing mine with the exact part. I have a trim specialist in town who can re-cover the leather so it matches, but aside from that I'm not sure if this will work at all -- with respect to the brackets, power connections, etc. Any suggestions?

RE: can I replace my seats?

I replaced the front seats in my 88 560 SEL with seats from a 91 420SEL that were in great condition. They feel brand new. My old seats were shot.

It's a direct swap. Five bolts. As for the electricals, it's also a simple swap. In my case, I lost the heated seats since they were optional on the 420 but I'm in central Texas so I didn't mind.

You can see before and after pics in my gallery:

RE: can I replace my seats?

You can go with later seats BUT the mounting holes will be different and the electrical plugs for controls will also be different. An adaptor bracket of 3/16 steel will bring the seat to better than stock spec as for mounting but the electricals will take someone who knows what they are doing to 'black box' the conversion' correctly. It is not that hard but should be done right and not just striping wires and trying to tape/twist them together which is a great way to burn up the inside of your car.
