Flat new tires! Help, please.

Just replaced all 4 tires on 1989, 560 SEL with recommended Michelin tires puchased from Costco. Two went flat within 24 hours. They will not hold air.I would appreciate any suggestions and recommendations.

RE: Flat new tires! Help, please.

Hi, JWS.

Call Costco and take it back in. Either they goofed mounting them, the stems aren't properly seated or there is a problem with the tires.

I used to be a tire jockey and there are also times that the beads are rusty, if they are not thoroughly cleaned the tires will go flat overnight. That's pretty rare, but on your vintage if you have the steel wheels, that's possible.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

RE: Flat new tires! Help, please.

I am not sure what details will be helpful to you.
Several months ago, I had a problem with one tire going flat. The tire store couldn't find a source for the problem, but eventually said the rims neede to be replaced. I had the tire fixed at another place and they held the air. After I had the new tires installed...the problem began again..this time two tires went flat.

Is there a special way these tires should be installed?....Do you think the rims could be
the problem?

Are your rims bent on the edge?

RE: Flat new tires! Help, please.

Thanks for your fast reply.

When I took the car to Costco for the new tires, I was their last customer for the night and they were short on staff....so I will follow up with Costco.

I am not sure what you mean by beads and what should be used to clean them....?

We drove the 560 SEL from Houston in 2002 and have
had it in Boise, Idaho, since that time.

No the rims are not bent. The rims are flaking on the inside according to one shop.

RE: Flat new tires! Help, please.

The beads are the inner most surface areas of the tires and they are the key to the success of tubeless tires. If the wheel mating surface is not clean and smooth, the beads will not fully seal and thus you have leaks. Costco should have a bath they can put the wheel in while the tire is on it, typically if it's a bead problem you'll see lots of little bubbles from all around the wheel.

In any event, their folks seem pretty good, I've bought lots of tires there, so get it back in and let them figure it out.

If you have alloy wheels, let them leak-test them with a tire mounted as well. It is possible for air to leak through the porous holes in the metal when the internal seal breaks down. Rare, but possible.

Good luck!
Greg
