ignition problems

OK. 5 & 7 have no spark at all.
I grounded them and no spark.

Car basically running rough. ignition coil is new along with many other parts... exchanged wires from other working cylinder but same...

could it be the ignition control unit?
how can I diagnose?

It's not all that, But it's mine.

RE: ignition problems

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind.
As for the ignition problem, can you explain what you changed and how it all started? if only two cylinders are not firing, the most likely cause is a cracked cap. but you say you replaced it, now did this problem start before or after you replaced it? are those two cylinders the only ones not firing, if every time you check spark and you get different cylinders not firing, this is most likely a bad distributor, as far I can remember, 380's dont have points, so you are most likely looking at the distributor contacts or a discharging condenser(its the plug with the green wire that connects the distributor with the control module). check those things out and let me know.

RE: ignition problems

nice ride dude.
thanks for the tip, I thought it could be the green condenser wire, but don't really know how to trouble shoot it.
I will buy new spark plug wires also.. I think "Buru"? don't know the name exactly...
I still have the "old" cap, but neither are cracked.

you are correct..no points in car.
I'll let you know what happens.. it'll take about a week since I have to order the condenser cable + install it. maybe buy the idle control unit and if I don't need it, return it?

it's the same cylinders not firing...
I bought the car with this problem, the guy didn't have money to fix it & had recently inherited it...
I knew the story + got the car checked for compression, etc.. all good the mechanic said it probably was the FUEL distributor, but I get gas to all injectors.. he also quoted me 4000min-5000max, of course... I ran away. LOL

I know it is an "electrical problem" everything else checks out okay to me. = this car is not equipped with a "computer/idle control unit"

b.t.w. : I like the avatar... LOL

RE: ignition problems

$4-5K? who did you take it to, german cars or mb specialists? either one of those are very expensive and mb specialists dont even know what they are doing. If you still have your car in the next few months, my shop will be up and running again, I'll gladly maintain your car.
My shop is Pera European Cars, we used to be on Waimanu st, right behind the bmw dealership. The building got sold by the owner, so we are looking for a new place right now.

RE: ignition problems

thanks, I'll look it up, or gimme an address when you get it open.
I appreciate all the free tech info you passing on.

yeah, when he started talking, I was saying in my mind "this guy is just not making sense"
$90 an hour to replace a fuel distributor = 4-5k?

I dismantled/cleaned manifold, upper plenum, removed distributor checked for leaks and only took about 5hours = $360 + parts
he won't accept parts either...
I understand they might be going by what the book says but dang, help a brother out LOL.
