I think Benz had created a nice image involving double-oval headlights (or some variation thereof) and a nice lateral grill. I think the move to blob headlights abandons that image. The wheel arches are just stupid. It started with the Mazda RX8 about 4 years ago. It just looks odd to me.
I also wonder about the copying of Maybach trunk/rear lights. I was never overly impressed by those elements on the Maybach and now the $100,000 cars look closer to the $300,000 cars.
I think BMW and Benz have always done a good job of keeping their styling advances gradual, which preserves the value and image of their older models. If you make wholesale changes (like Honda or Nissan) then you make your earlier models look old very fast.
