Why I like my CEL

For some time now I've had an intermittent CEL. You know, you get the light, then through a few start/stop cycles it goes out. Then at some point it comes back on.

In my case (2001 E320) it's illumination is not accompanied by any noticeable changes in driveability. I will add that I don't drive the car hard, so I really wouldn't know if WOT is different, but it's otherwise just as responsive as always. Naturally I haven't checked emissions, so I don't know if those have changed.

The odd thing is that during the periods when the CEL is on, my fuel economy improves by 5-10%. (It stayed on long enough on the last cycle to let me run through a tank, my average for how I drive -- mostly freeway -- usually is about 25 and the CEL tank was almost 27.) My guess is that it's related to one end or another of a (normally closed) loop and the computer is using a baseline instead of a certain adjustment or two.

I haven't yet read the codes to see what's up (in the 210 forum I noted that my dealer had failed to properly reinsert the connector behind the pop-open door, so I have to remove the lower dash panel now[}:)]), but I'm just curious whether anyone else has experienced anything similar with a CEL.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Greg, I was entertained by your post. I think people avoided it because they figured the CEL was a model no one had heard of yet [8D]

Thanks, Marsden.

I was hoping for some meaningful feedback -- which is why I posted it in the general forum -- and though many folks have looked at it, I guess no one else has had that experience (or they're too ashamed to admit they drove around with the CEL illuminated!).

RE: Why I like my CEL

You might get some feedback if you didn't make folks guess what CEL is. Spell it out the first time you use it. It's bad enough with teenagers using their idiotic SMS shorthand. Don't make us guess that you mean Check Engine Light.

Many things can cause it to illuminate, but one that's common is low octane fuel.

RE: Why I like my CEL

I'm glad you have recalled the term non sequitur. It just doesn't follow from my post.[:)] Pun intended.

A common cause of a Check Engine Light (CEL), especially one that is intermittent, is low octane fuel. Low octane fuel may not cause recognizable driveability problems, but could illuminate the CEL.

You said you didn't experience driveability problems, so it is likely not from water in the gasoline (especially some that may be trapped in the fuel filter) - another common cause.

Both of the foregoing have occurred in my wife's cars, resulting in Check Engine Light illumination.

You speculated yourself that the fuel mileages you experienced may be the computer inaccurately sensing what is going on - you did not say whether your fuel readings were manually calculated, or shown by the vehicle's trip computer. That leaves the question a bit open.

Leaving the abbreviation "CEL" unexplained on first use is very little different from teenies and their nearly unintelligible short message service typing styles seen in some postings (that I routinely ignore, because I would like people to communicate clearly when they ask for assistance) - eh, WOT?
