RE: Magellan and Mercedes duke it out.

Hey Corky! I just looked up the Magellan based on your recommendation. Thought I might get one for my pickup truck. So... I notice it's made in Thailand! Any connection?!

Also, does it switch to a dark background at night like the Mercedes unit does? That's one of my favorite features actually. And how well does it work with only the integral antenna? I notice external antennas advertised... TIA.

I didn't realize that it was made in Thailand until you pointed it out. No connection.

The Magellan won't see through the windscreens of my two MBs in BKK. I need an external 'eye'[:D][:)]

RE: Magellan and Mercedes duke it out.

Okay, let's take your MB bashes one-at-a-time:

1) The Magellan screen was always pointed in the direction that you were going while the top of the MB display always pointed north even if the car was going south.
~My S-class NAV can be set to always point north or in the direction of travel. I prefer N because it keeps me oriented w/ regard to true north.

2) The Magellan screen was clearer and offered more details...like street names.
~My S screen is very clear and offers more details than I can assimilate while driving safely.

3) The Magellan told the real driving distance between A and B while the MB gave the how-the-bird-flies distance.
~My NAV tells real driving distances, not how-the-bird-flies distance. Don't know why yours thinks it is a bird.

4) The Magellan gave you choices (shortest, fastest, most freeways, no freeways) while the MG did not.
~My S-class NAV gives many choices (Shortest, Fastest, w/ or w/out toll roads, w/ or w/out water crossings, and lot more).

5) The Magellan took my car to the exact address while the MB took my car to the street.
~My NAV gets me to the exact address or w/in a few feet of the address I enter.

6) Both voices were feminine; but the MB voice sounded like that of a dungeon queen: I could see her dressed in black leather.
~I kind of like the dungeon queen voice. I can see her in black leather too!

7) The Magellan can be moved from car to car.
~As long as you buy a Mercedes w/ NAV you don't need to move it.

8) The MB does not hog my cigarette lighter.
~Amen, brother!

Now if my NAV could provide me w/ your naked ladies, I'd marry it.

This is all starting to sound kind of familar.

As long as you're not moving, or not stationned on the ROAD itself (read: driveway,...) the MB nav always calculates how-the-bird-flies distance. Normally, once you get moving out on the street, it will calculate and give you the real driving distance immediately. If your navy does not do this, there is something wrong.

RE: Magellan and Mercedes duke it out.

I owe Mercedes a big apology. We drove from home to Disney World and it did not miss a beat.

Eh, ain't no thang. Was a fun discussion anyway [:)]

And, of course, it lets me link another photo of a console/dash to show how very nice the Mercedes NAV looks, so well integrated and all...

Marsden, you are making me mad![:(!]

Why don't you buy me an E-Class so I don't have to regret it anymore.

On a side note, the Comand looks very nice, and with the wood trim, and wood steering wheel.[:)]

RE: Magellan and Mercedes duke it out.

You know the best part? It's the curve of the ashtray lid. That makes the transition between horizontal and vertical.

They got that exactly right. [:D]
