Check Engine Light

Hi ya'll. Im new to the forums so let me introduce myself. My mother just recently purchased a 2000 E430. I myself own a Lexus SC400, but thats besides the point. Recentlly her car has showed the check engine light. I have searched the forums here, and have not found a viable solution to my problem. I dont know how to pull the code also, so if you are able to give me the direct solution to this enigma, or tell me how to pull the code, i would gladly appreciate your help. Thank you.

RE: Check Engine Light

Run down to Advanced Auto or Autozone. They can read it. There should be no charge.

RE: Check Engine Light

Hey, 430. Welcome to the forum.

The CEL reports lots and lots of things, so you have to read the codes. It's a standard connector and tool which is a nice thing.

The OBD-II port is just inside the hood release, facing down. There is a little hinged cover that pops open from the front.

If you're in a DIY mode, you can rent a reader for free at lots of chain stores, I got one from Kragen (aka Shucks and Checker). Had to pay a hefty deposit, but they give it back when you return the tool.

In any event, you plug the reader into the OBD-II port (it's polarized, only goes in one way), turn on the key (Don't start the car, just turn the key to position 2) and press the read button on the device. Copy down the codes and you can erase them as well, but if you haven't fixed it they'll come right back.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
