ignition key will not turn

I attempted to start my E320 and the key will not turn. It seems to be locked, but I have no idea how it got that way. Any ideas on releasing this feature.

This may sound stupid, but did you try turning the steering wheel a little?

Thanks and yes I tried to move the steering wheel, but no luck. I checked the gear shift and everything seems to be in order, but the key won't budge.

RE: ignition key will not turn

Is the key bent in any way, sometimes a slight bend in the key can change it enough to make it INOP. Also, if your tire is against a curb you have to REALY turn the wheel both ways while trying the key... If all else fails, try a locksmith, or a TRUSTED mechanic...

Hi Charlee.

Is it stuck in the ignition?

If it is, try recharging the battery, or get someone with a start pack to help you. If you must, use jump cables.

Regards

Geir

No one has given you the prime advice-Don't force it!

You haven't given any clues as to how old/worn the lock/key are?

If age/wear are a factor, a lot of gentle giggling with pulling/pushing the key may just free it.If it does, get it replaced immediately-You rarely get second chances with these things.

if you have one of the new transponder type keys (no blade) this sounds like a failed EIS. expensive to fix i'm afraid. Do a search it has been covered before.

I was thinking that.

Charlee, what year is your E320? My Uncle had this happen with his W210 E320.

The key can possibly be salvaged. Pull the batteries out.

Let the key dry by setting it on some plain uncooked rice in a sealed container. In a day or two with new batteries it may work again.

I know the keys are expensive, but all of the cars with smart keys should have two keys so that if on gets damaged or just wears out the car is not sitting for several days while a new key is gotten from a dealer.
