Finally visited the dealer today to drive the new S550. Not bad. I liked the way the exterior looked already, from photos, and I think it looks fine in person too. Most notably, the fender flares are MUCH less prominent than I expected. I have no issue with them at all. Mostly I was struck by how similar the car looks to the outgoing model. Hadn't gotten that impression from photos. The dash/console/shifter/idrive still hasn't grown on me, but the cabin is otherwise agreeable. Driving, no big deal, frankly. Definitely smooth, quiet and powerful, but the car felt slightly large for my taste.
Also drove a CLS, since it's so easy to get AVS (ventilated seats) on them. I like it, especially its dash/console which are about the most attractive I've seen anywhere, but I'm too big to get in and out of that car easily. Won't happen. Then tried a CL, on which you can get great deals since it's about to be replaced. Snug on headroom, to my dismay. I still like the car, though, despite its overstyled rear quarter, and it remains an option.
Salesman said the only way to get AVS with a six-cylinder engine is to special-order it. Then you pay list price plus special-order fee. A virtue of that though is you wouldn't have to settle for a grey Mercedes. Any thoughts?
