RE: Old Mercedes 300D?

Buy an manual and some tools and learn how to do stuff on your car. I am by no means a "auto surgeon", but I have learned how to do different things over the years. The trick is to realize when the job is beyond you and give it to an expert to fix.

I would like to buy a Mercedes diesel for $8000k or less and trade in my 2003 Toyota Echo for one.
First, a 300 D for that money - which will be almost mint - will be more reliable than a 2003 anything.

Second, the man’s driving an Echo, for god’s sake… (!)

Third, life is short – drive what you like and enjoy it.

RE: Old Mercedes 300D?

I think Pentagon is painting with black paint here.
Those models woudn't be so famous and wouldn't be still on the roads in big numbers if they would break down so easily. Each car require some repairs sooner, or later, but with this legend it is always later.
I have a feeling, that statistically his 3-years old ML is having bigger chances for major expense, than 20 years old 300d.
This way or another the kept-up 300d will potentially outlast by far any other car you can buy for $4990.
Than the cost of parts is unbeatable. Ebay is having almost everything. Rebuild starters for $50, set of new rotors for $120, taillights for $29, turbos ... actually nobody buys them, why should they [8D]

I couldn't agree more. Make no apologies to people who wonder why I spend so much money on cars. Because I enjoy them, that's why. And as vices go, it's really rather harmless [:)]
