RE: slk vs crossfir

if the last respondant thinks the slk costs more to make than a crossfire-- hes silly.

mb makes a hefty profit on everything they sell to the public. the money is NOT in the sheetmetal or trim; its in everything that moves. and in that area, the car is wholly mercedes benz.

i like chrysler, ive been a chrysler person for a decade now and i couldnt be happier with my cars. i adore them both equally and so shouldnt everyone else.

if the decision was bad, then it was bad; they arent going to change it because some american barstards that aspire to be eurotrash are complaining that price savvy shoppers are picking the crossfire over the poorly styled slk.

theyre both benefiting from the merge-- but i still hold the opinion that chrysler was better without benz-- their 1993-1998 models were the best chryslers ever built. they were setting market trends before mercedes came into the picture; now theyre just following.

RE: slk vs crossfir

Actually the Xfire is wholly "Daimler Chrysler" as is a Mercedes. It is actually cheaper to build a Crossfire than an SLK. There is not hard top mechanism and the interior is made from cheaper material with less options as the R170 had. The powertrain was already developed and tested from prior models like the SLK320. You can bet because of the profit margin that they want to make, they went and did some cost cutting for the Xfire. If you look at switches and dash trim you will notice difference. If you don't order heated seats for example, they do not install a different dash panel without the holes for the switches but the put cheap blanks in the holes. On the SLK there were several wood trims available and there is a different panel for a car with different options. If they are going to sell it for less, you can bet that they make it for less.

As far as 1993-1998 Chrysler models being the best ever built, most were made by Mitsubishi then. They had that "Cab Forward" concept with cheap front wheel drive powertrains. They broke down and leaked transmission fluid because of bad seals. The Neon was a joke. They had the Cloud cars of Cirrus, Stratus, and the Plymouth Breeze all Mitsubishi powered. The only good car was the 300M.

Chrysler may have been taken over by Mercedes but they so far have gained the most. The 300C and Dodge Magnum are hardly following the industry.

I test drove the Xfire. The ride was very uncomfortable. Might as well have been sitting on a
bucket. The hard top of the SLK was one of the reasons for buying it over
any other make of similar size.

The Crossfire isn't built by Chrysler, it's built by Steyr in Austria. That would be the same Steyr that builds the G-wagen, some of the W211s and many other things.
Actually all the W211s are now built in that Mercedes factory at that place in Germany which I cannot spell, but they are all built there now.

Anyways, I think the problem is that a lot of people like to give Mercedes heat, so it puts us on the defensive.
The 211's are not built in Germany, they are built in Aus.
