Car won't start!

Hey fellas,

I have a ML 320, 2001... I live in Syracuse, NY so the weather is very cold up here... I have trouble starting my car, It takes like 20 tries to start the car. After driving it for a while, the engine starts to heat up and the coolant light comes on... It goes up to 120oC but it still runs, do I need a coolant flush... The coolant level is normal... Any ideas?

RE: Car won't start!

If the coolant used to be some other color than red, then you probably have a bad head gasket. In such a case, the coolant "fouls" the spark plugs and makes the vehicle difficult to start, ESPECIALLY when it is cold. The coolant will turn a darker color (brown, reddish/brown) sometimes because the bad gasket is forcing engine oil into the cooling system, and quite possibly coolant into the engine oil. This will also cause overheating because the cooling system is depressurized. You should STOP DRIVING IMMEDIATELY because it is very easy to destroy the engine if you have a bad head gasket, and driving at 120 deg is HORRIBLE for the engine, and can also cause engine failure. This can be verified by a compression test - one or some cylinders will be low on compression. HAVE IT TOWED TO THE GARAGE do not drive.

If the coolant was always "red" (i.e. like the orange stuff that GM cars use), then maybe all you need is a thermostat. At any rate, DO NOT drive it overheated like that, its very easy to destroy an engine that way.

RE: Car won't start!

I would not drive 1 more mile until the problem is resolved. Overheating will ruin the engine beyond a reasonable amount worth fixing.
The OEM coolant fluid should not be red in color.

The real ML gurus are in the W163 forum and can really help you out in great detail.

As far as the starting issue that could be anumber of things.
Please bring your questions to the W163 forum and there will be some good help.

RE: Car won't start!

Just a thought... if his coolant is not low I don't think he is seeping into the heads. Thermostat might be it. Anyone think of this... maybe he has got coolant freezing somewhere in the engine. I remember one time when I was going to school up in Lubbock (they actually have winter in that part of TX) Anyway... for a week or so the highest temp was around 15 deg F. We all got a bright idea for a road trip to Houston until I went and started up my old Z (76 280Z). First I smelled gas really bad... the metal hoses had contracted so much in the cold the rubber lines were leaking... tightened those back up and started it once again. Ran it to warm it up for about 5-10 minutes... when the temp shot through the roof. Looked inside my radiator and it was frozen solid. Nice block of green ice. Maybe something similar is going on since it is apparently not pumping anything to cool itself off.

Either way... let us know what happens and do take get it into a shop post haste. Would hate to hear the worse for you and will keep my fingers crossed.

RE: Car won't start!

Yeah the first thing I would do is check the thermastat and then do a compression test and then check the head gasket and maily do not drive it. until you figure out or fix the problem
