RE: CLS500 or CLS55 AMG?
It depends on what you like in a car. I can't imagine what a CLS500 could do BETTER than an CLS55 AMG, other than gas mileage and operating cost. But your premise is that price-is-no-object.
I bought a C32 AMG and would not have considered a C320. (I might have looked at a 2005 C350 with manual transmission). I like performance, and you can't have too much of a good thing. The AMG label means a special engine, suspension and brakes. You get a lot of stuff for your money.
As to the reliability of AMG, you have to remember that AMG is a division Mercedes Benz, so it's more than just an upgrade to an existing car. It's Benz quality and comes with a full warranty.
I'm not a big-car lover, and the concept of a big car that goes crazy fast does not appeal to me much; but if I was looking for a big, fast car, it would be hard to find anything bigger or faster than the AMG.
