New Old Gullwings?

I remember sometime back reading in a magazine about some company that either retrofitted old Gullwings with new mercedes engines, electronics, ect.. or possibly they made a replica with new mercedes parts. Anybody know of this sort of thing?

RE: New Old Gullwings?

back in the late 1980's I was in a facility in southern Calif. maybe near Torrance where they were constructing the gullwing's. They had about 7 or 8 they were working on. They had an old rusted out original to copy from. They were making the frames to there own specs, but they purchased genuine MB parts, used, new, remade, etc. The finished product looked like the original and very well could have been superior to the original.

interesting. How much $$$ were they? Probably an insane amount. I wonder how many people bought them. Just rich people who didnt know how else to use there money I guess.

I was lucky enough to visit a few MB sites around Germany two years ago, one of my favorite places was the Classic Center, my mecca. As you know, you can take your MB (any vintage) and have it restored to factory spec or factory +. A salesman there who was showing me their inventory said that a number of classic SL owners had their cars retrofitted with AMG 5.4 v8's!!!![:0] In a way i feel like this would be a fun car to drive, however it is kind of a bastardization in a way at the same time. At least it wasn't the cliche chevy 350ci conversion that you see on so many cars. I always feel like that is a redneck way to add more power, rather than learn a new engine and how to tune it, just shove somethin in there i can throw some cherrybombs and high cfm carbs.

supposedly. They have a Classic Center in Irvine, California. I wonder if you can go there and just wander around and look at MB's.

RE: New Old Gullwings?

A good friend of mine told me a story of the Millenium Gullwing.

Apparently, the owner saved tons and tons of parts (spares), and when he died the wife had the parts (still unopened, new and enough to complete a whole new Gullwing) taken out of storage and when somebody (forgot parts of the story) saw it, they built the first Millenium Gullwing as it was post 2000 I think.

A bit sketchy, but can anybody confirm this?

RE: New Old Gullwings?

thanks for those links Ears

I know we are all biased here, especially of our german steel, and it kinda puzzles me as to why people would buy some of these cars. Not to knock on these companies and their efforts, but these cars just don't look right... and, LOL, just like i stated earlier, that ol 350 or 351 always seems to sneak their way into other cars such is stated in the options of the LS300 on one of those sites. I just have to wonder, who buys these? Do they really have the volume to make a company like that float? Maybe they are used in movies as those rare vintage cars you see explode. Although in the Will Smith movie Enemy of the State, they really did roll a w108 into that lake in the beginning... that car looks just like my w108 and it made me sick when they did that.[|)]

BTW, a guy I know of and whose shop I have visited a few times back home has a 300SL convertible sitting in his hangar at his house in N.WA. Sky Blue on red leather which is actually a neat combination. It has optional factory rallie lights(4). It will never get restored as he has too many airplane projects to finish before he dies(he is getting up there as far as I can tell). God I wish I could buy that car from him. The convertible is so much more beautiful than the gullwing in my opinion.
