500SL which is best?

I've decided I want to get a 500SL, like the '89 to '95 somewhere in there, I want it black and I hear there is a 5.0 Liter 32-valve DOHC V-8. I want that engine! Anyone know this car in particular, know what year/etc. I should look for? This car does it for me, I think it is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I will have one within a few months and it is gonna be all Black. Will post pics here when I get it! Thanks[8D][B)][8]

RE: 500SL which is best?

how much are you willing to spend? You should try to get one of the newer R129's. like a year 2000-2002.

But if you cant, i would go for something right in the middle, like the 95 or 96.

My cars:

BLACK 1996 S500 (W140) - Sold

BURGUNDY 1989 560 SEL (W126) - Sold

RE: 500SL which is best?

Neighborhood of $20K. I am seeing them on ebay around 12-15-20K and some around 22,500 and they were over $100,000 when new! This is how it hits me, I suddenly decide I want something and within a few weeks I am driving it. Those 500SL's when all black and having 17 inch or 18 inch wheels all super clean and polished, are just too hot to resist. I can't wait to arrive at the BBQ in one!! So it's January and it's pouring down rain here in Seattle, that just gives me time. I found a 93 with 62K miles and way cool stereo and 18 inch wheels, the car just is too much- it belongs in my garage. But if I can get one just like it with around 75K miles for 12-15K then that's an even better deal. I might go for a 95 or 96 if the deal is right, I'd sure like to get lo miles and I really prefer black though. But who know- I don't have a crystal ball, I might find another one I fall in love with. We'll see! I do think I want the 5.0 engine and not a 3.8 or whatever else...[:)]

RE: 500SL which is best?

I was looking for a 129 500 before my dad gave me the old 126-I agree with you, probably the nicest 'modern' Merc ever produced.
I def wouldn't consider anything but the 5.0 litre.Even they don't exactly haul like you might expect, but they are relaxed. At the time,I couldnt decide whether to go for the 4spd or 5spd auto.I read conflicting reports, mainly that early 5spds can be unreliable and expensive (like everything on 129s).
Anyway,at the time I found a website which covered just about everything you need to know about the model.I will do some research and let you know if I can find it.Probably, the guys in the 129 section can send you straight to it.

Had a quick look,found this:

http://www.mbcoupes.com/r129index.htm

But I don't think it's the one I remember.

You could alway look at the R107 500SL's. You might fall in love with one of them.

RE: 500SL which is best?

I would keep away from ebay. There are some great sellers out there and then there are some really bad ones. I had a 911SC that I was thinking of buying a few years ago. It was in Columbus, OH. Contacted the seller. He told me the car was in great shape. I have a PPI done on it. The tech told me he had not seen a car in that bad of a shape in years. The outside looked good, but the trans, clutch, engine all had serious issues. The same car came up on ebay about 3 days after I passed on it. I know it was the same since the VIN matched. The seller had a high rating. The thing that got me is that he had the engine listed as excellent, clutch excellent etc. Also made no mention of the major oil leak and the $8000 to $12000 worth of work the SC needed. Now before you think that the shop I had it done at had problems, it was Auto Assets. They have an excellent reputation with porsches.
Have you looked on autotrader as well, or cars.com?

I agree with this. I heard this morning many of the flooded out cars from hurricanes Katrina & Rita are starting to surface around the country.

Be VERY careful & good luck!

Great info- thanks! I'll have to be on the lookout for hurricane damaged cars. I think I've decided I want a 1997. What a car. If God were to get tired of flying around in the ionosphere and come down to earth, he'd want to be driving one of these. Here's some cool drool info... http://www.kenrockwell.com/sl/
Now my next question is, how am I supposed to get a good nights' sleep until I have one of these in my garage![:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)][:)][B)]

I had the same engine in my Old 1997 S600, and it was such a good car. So quick and speedy. I totally wish I had that car back agen. i couldnt pay for it.[:(]

But on the bright side, my dream car garage will be a W140 S600, and a R129 SL600. Yea.[:)]

My cars:

BLACK 1996 S500 (W140) - Sold

BURGUNDY 1989 560 SEL (W126) - Sold
