RE: "new" car

It is my first car - I wasn't sure the folks would let me get it at first. I wasn't sure I'd get anything at all, and I sure didn't dream it'd be a mercedes. I only started shopping seriously for one about a year ago. We don't really have a history with luxury cars and my dad wasn't convinced by my argument that you can drive an old benz diesel till you're tired of it if you care for it right.

I'm really enjoying it... it's fun to drive. Since the color is "pearl black" we named it the Black Pearl and then shortened it so my car is named "pearl" whenever somebody asks if it has a name... though I usually just call it the benz.

Thanks everybody for all the help with it and the patience for my questions, my long writing style, and so forth... I'm really enjoying it, there's nothing quite like european cars for driving experience.

But I'm really not a snob about it, though - of course I'm proud I have a mercedes, but if it had been as dependable and fun as this one is, I'd have bought a Rolls-Canardly and never complained. It's just a matter of this seemed like a good choice, and it has proved itself worthy so far.

If the cats don't take all the paint off, that is.

funny you should mention that. In my family, we just call my black 1996 S500, "the black car", and the burgundy 560 SEL, "the red car" Only recently though, i am convincing everyone to call them the W140 and thw W126. hehe[:D]

RE: "new" car

Hi mssdoglover,

Congratulations to your new and first car. It looks like it's in excellent shape for a 20-yr old car.

From what I've read so far, you seem like a very nice, polite and responsible young fellow with a good head on your shoulder. Don't apologize for your writing style. I tend to write a lot too.

Too bad you don't have a covered garage for your car, but perhaps you would consider parking your car out of the way of your 2 cats. I just hope that they don't scratch your paint too much.

It's funny how your name is dog lover but you have 2 cats.[:D]

RE: "new" car

There's nowhere that's really out of the way of the cats, they're outdoor cats and they're used to having the run of the place. We also have 4 dogs - I just had to have cats when I was little. I don't think they'll scratch it too badly, but it's a lot of work to keep the mud from seeping in... who knows whether it'll start eating it or not.

My grandmother ransacked her material closet and did me a cover that consists of a long piece of nice soft, non-scratcy cloth sewed to a wider bedsheet that's also non-scratching... the problem now is weighing it down with something - it keeps blowing off. I've got some little denim sacks... I need to get lead shot or something to put in them and hang them from each corner, maybe that'll keep it on.

It's a funny looking cover - half of it is cream colored and the other half is bright green.. but hey, it doesn't scratch it even if there's dirt on the car, and it saved me several bucks that I need for other stuff more.

RE: "new" car

I have a much better solution than a car cover.I call my car 'Dirty Gerty' (Gertrude is a good Tutonic name)so I never get tempted to wash the thing and make the name sound inappropriate.
