Dealership,Independent or chain store??

I am a independent european repair shop owner. I was driving back to my shop and I noticed a E65 on a rack with tires off at the "Just Brakes" next door to me.
I cannot understand why someone would take a car like that to "Just Brakes" for anything! So, I was wondering how many MB owners perfer dealership, independent or chain stores for repairs.
Thanks
Kenneth

RE: Dealership,Independent or chain store??

Depends on the car.

When I had a new Benz it went to the stealers.

On my old Benz it goes to an indie.

Really comes down to expertise and price and I've found the stealers have the expertise and not too bad a price on new cars but the indies have much better expertise and lower prices on the older cars (the stealers scratch their heads for too long with the older models = $).

Cheers

RE: Dealership,Independent or chain store??

Mostly an independant who specialized in MB (motorwerks)for the big stuff. Small stuff usually I do or I have someone in the area do the work. Rarely ever the dealership. I usually take the cars in to the dealership pnce a year to have them look it over and I have an oil change done there at the same time.

Kenneth,
I would be in line with 420. Except I've never had a new benz. I do a lot of the simple maint myself and rely on an indie here in Austin that I've been going to for some 10 odd years. They specialize in Benz and also do some ferrari work as well. They are reliable, trustworthy, and their prices are usually a lot better than the dealer. Their shop is also maintained quite meticulously... very neat and clean. But the main reason I use them is because I trust them... and the owner. I know quite a bit about cars so they couldn't BS me if they tried.... but it all comes down to trust. And because of this his lot is always full of cars in line for work and maint. Build yourself a good reputation and the word of mouth will bring in the customers. Anyone I know with a benz knows about Ben's Workshop from me.

Best,
Z

Warranty at the dealer - --routine A and B service at an Indy with former dealer-trained staff...saves thirty bucks an hour and a bit of a break on parts. The Indy doesn't have all the diagnostic equipment, so there are times we'll pay $75 at the dealer for their computer service-- may/may not have the work done there.
But brakes, oil change and normal service is done at the independent dealer here in the Scottsdale airpark for the past 12 years plus we've bought 5 cars from them that they buy from the MB auction.
Kinda feels like the best of both worlds and a better value for the checkbook.

RE: Dealership,Independent or chain store??

The mechanic you take your MB to should have at some point in his/her career received training from Mercedes.

Otherwise he will be useless, as the mechanical aspects of Chevies and Mercedes are apples/oranges.

Yes, there may be a simularity here and there, but before you understand the differences you can't comprehend the simularities.

Lots of independents can't even get the wheel bolts correct, as a nearby thread indicates.

I only go to Star Mercedes (Yorkville, IL) or Naperville Mercedes (Naperville, IL). I'm not taking my $75K car to a place that doesn't specialize in MB's.

Scott Imports in Warwick RI, ex MB dealer mechanic gone Indy. Extremely fair and reasonable.

I have heard too many dealer stories like this:

Service Manager: "No car leaves this service center with under $1,000 in repairs without authorization from me."

The famous oil change turned, "oh did you know your Kanifler Valve is leaking?"

Dealer for me! Any extra cost is worth the peace of mind knowing it was done right.
