Uh oh. You just reminded me about the color fading a little. Our ML was hit in the bumper, and we're sending it in to get repainted. I hope it goes well. Luckily it's on the lower part of the bumper, not really noticable.
what color is it. Black usually stays pretty good. But burgundy, Beige, stuff like that will make a big difference.
Capri Blue! I love the color. It's dark blue. But in flourescent light it's a little lighter dark blue. In halogen light, it's a deep purple-blue. Man are they going to have a hard time matching the color.

thats cool. I have seen a couple of w164's that are dark blue, and i love the color. Most ml's you see are black or beige. Most don't order it with blue. But it certainly looks good.

My cars:

BURGUNDY 1989 560 SEL (W126) - Sold

RE: Just bought some touch up paint

Cheap...
21 cans of krylon...plus one produce bag to huff the 21st can while applying paint so you will think it looks "bitchin"

Somewhat cheap...
600.00 at a scuff and paint place such as maaco..results should look good for a month.

Average...1500
Place that will just sand the clear off, primer, then paint. All of this without taking off parts and masking off windows, grill, etc etc

Good...2500
Same as above but will sand to the metal and possibly paint parts individually and possibly paint the jams.

Great...3500 to ?

Will remove all parts and glass, sand down to the metal and primed, paint both side of body parts, replace all rubber seals, dustless booth, german paint, etc etc. The ? is due to glass possibly breaking upon removal, damaged body clips, old parts breaking upon removal etc etc that the body shop will not be responsible for.

Body work is given on all of these and will go from bondo to metal work depending on quality.

Some do, some don't, some will, some won't, but I might!

how much do decent paint jobs go for nowadays guys?
Had an old Volvo repainted at Earl Scheib which is like Maaco... the guy there showed me some jobs they'd just completed, so I'd know what to expect. Quality was good not great. One big thing is that they have people mask everything with tape, they don't remove anything, so you're better off removing trim, etc yourself then reapplying it after the job's done.

Chose a beautiful burgundy metallic, paid extra for one of their "higher-class" paint options http://www.earlscheib.com/pro3.php, and was very happy with the results. It's not remotely appropriate for a really valuable car. But was great to give an old beater a new lease on life. Three years later, when I sold the Volvo, the paint was as good as the day they put it on.

YMMV of course. Wherever you go, look at the jobs they're delivering to customers that day. Good luck!

RE: Just bought some touch up paint

living in suburb bordering the cbd (central business district) and not having a garage, i park my 420se on the street...

some a**wipe ran a key-scratch along whole side of my 420se to extent that white was showing beneath the original ?barolo? red of the car...

fortunately the car was always garaged by the previous owner and, albeit a 1990 model, the paint has not faded...

i bought a bottle of 'red' turtle wax which comes with a 'chapstick' and following the instructions you can hardly see the scratch unless you're very close and at eye level with the scratch...

have only gone over the scratch once but as i have enough chapstick left i will most likely go over it again...

have taken some 'before' photos and once i go over the scratch again will post the 'after' photos as well

there are some minor dents/marks/scratches that i intend buying some touch up paint and will also include them as well...

many thanks for the tips on thinning out the colour and lacquer,,, was thinking of doing same but in view of slight colour change will test on parts of car it's not so visible on...

happy and safe motoring
kindest

RE: Just bought some touch up paint

I used that product on a red car I used to own.

Liked the results but be warned they are not permanent.
