Hi guys,
I'm new to the MB world and keep hearing about the wiring harness that needs to be changes. Can someone briefly explain what it is and what it takes to change it? Thanks

RE: Wiring Harness

You may be referring to the upper harness on the w124 V8 cars. I am not that familiar so you might want to use the search function.

RE: Wiring Harness

In early to mid 1990s MB tried to be "green" by using biodegradable materials in wiring.

They did.

RE: Wiring Harness

Wow. I see you have a 600sel. Yea, you will need a new wire harness, if one has not already been installed. To cut down on costs Mercedes used lower quality wires which become extremely brittle and crack over time, causing exposed wires to make unwanted contact with one another. This causes all sorts of problems, which can only be resolved by replacing the harness. Your cars has a vast wiring harness, as it is a v12. I remember painfully when we had a 95 s600 coupe in the shop that needed a new wire harness. I don't exactly remember the final cost, but is was around $2000. Hope that answers your question.

RE: Wiring Harness

As you can see from the previouse reply, this problem also occurred not only on V-8's but also I-6 engines from '93 to about '95.

$2K for the SL320? I thought mine was bad at $1K for my 2.8.

RE: Wiring Harness

They were all bad from 93-95. Replace ASAP or face more $$$$ down the road. They can fry out your computer if you let it go too far.

You can get a harness at the dealer for about 650 bucks. Should be a couple hours labor. 1k at the dealer sounds about right. 2k sounds way out of line.
