Well, a C230K can be had for right around $32,000 or so. Not cheap, of course, but you must realize that a version of the Chevrolet Impala stickers almost as high, so...average person? Probably not, but you probably don't have to be rich to get a C-class.

In Canada - base C class starts at CDN 38,450.00 for a C230 and hits CDN 57,200.00 for a C3350

So it is not cheap here - however,we do have the B class which can go from about 33 to 40 - so it is a bit more affordable

A local car supermarket was selling new pre-registered C180 sports for £17k and the average UK earnings is £23K. Not sure how that compares.

Lets do some benchmarking here.

In the US, the C-class is typically owned by a junior executive, or even someone like an executive secretary. It is not unusual for someone to drive a car that costs 1/3 of their annual salary.

Also, a lower end C class costs about twice as much as an entry level car, and about half as much as a large luxury car.

Leasing is very popular, and it lets people drive nice cars for lower payments.

You are very right - That is the rule of thumb - so at a CDN base price of 38K - the salary range to buy a C is about 114 K - national average in Canada is somewhere around 40

Without trying to sound demeaning or condescending, do you think that Mercedes target demographic is truly the "average" buyer?

I think the case with MB, along with BMW and other upscale makers, is that they target the professional and business market with moderate incomes and above. Each time one of these brands has attempted to offer an "everyman" brand targeted to a lower pricepoint, it's backfired.

They're more expensive to buy, more expensive to maintain and bring a generally higher resale when traded or sold in comparison to main stream Fords, Chevy's and the like.

To some degree, I suppose that's exactly why we want `em.
