Great ending to a scary story. I have had a couple of the same type of stories but not with as high possible losses. I have been finding for the past five years or so, most of the dealers and indies are just plug and pray fixing cars and not doing actual diagnostic troubleshooting (want to buy a purfectly good used heater blower that was not the problem?).

Experience is the key. My dealer in Lexington has several very good guys and if I get them I am in luck, otherwise, plug and pray. Same with the indies. My current guy, Stuttgart Motors is very good and won't even try to fix something unless it really really needs it.

Great lesson for that ol second opinion.

What a great outcome. Glad to see the situation is moving in a postive direction.

I learned an interesting thing at a MBCA tech session last year. The local MBNA rep was demonstrating the computer diagnostic system the dealers lease from MB. When asked if Indies could use the system he said it wasn't available to them. Someone suggested to him that MB HAD to make the diagnostic code info available to them. His response was that Indies got access to information that cross references a 3 digit error code but that the MB dealers can see 4 digits - enabling a much more direct isolation of a problem. I think this situation also makes it easier for an Indie to be led down the wrong path with a diagnosis. I'm not saying this is what happened here - its just more fuel for the statement someone else said about the dealers knowing more about the cars.

If this is the case with independents not having the proper codes, then we are ALL in big trouble!!
Can anyone else verify this?
I was at the Firestone dealer and they said they could hook up their computer to the car as well!
Is it software only that MB sells?
It just is really hard to imagine that only the dealers get the 'uncorrupted' version!
