That is a very good way to check the battery, Andrzejek. One has to realize that in doing this, a loose battery connection can also cause the dimming when starting, too.

If the lights noticably dim, you have a bad battery (the battery has enough power for the lights to work, but not enough amperage to turn over the engine).
