1985 300d vs 1985 300sd

I may have an option b/w buying a 1985 300D (W123) with 175k miles and a 1985 300SD(W126) with about 220K miles. The prices are similar (the SD slightly higher, but both negotiable). What are the pros & cons of each?

RE: 1985 300d vs 1985 300sd

Having never owned either but shopped extensively and tried some of both before making my final decision, I would go with the SD. The mileage is not a problem, as long as its in good shape meaning no rust, engine runs well, not too much smoke, that sort of thing... it'll run longer than you want it to if it's in good shape.

I personally feel that the SD has a more attractive body and tend to suspect, as it was from the higher class of car, that it is probably made a tad better, though nobody could say that mercedes made anything too badly.

That said, there's not much technical difference, it's down to personal taste. if you like the looks of the D better, if it has less rust, if you like the mileage better, whatever... there's nothing WRONG with a D.

Bottom line: Personally I'd go with the SD but I can't come up with a really good reason for it so go on and get whichever one feels right to you... a Benz finds its owner, not the other way around.

Hope this was helpful.

Hello - I have a very limited experience with both cars, but overall I assume that an SD would be better cared for than a 300d. That's a very generalized thing to say, but I tend to think that someone who was willing to spend the dough on an SD would be more likely to use a higher quality oil change service vs a quick lube, take care of vacuum problems when they arose rather than live without the rear right door auto-lock, spend the bread on german glow plugs rather than less expensive, lower quality parts, etc... I'm opening a can of worms, but that's my ignorant assumption. However, I think both cars are fantastic and it all depends on who took care of them originally. My $0.02.

All things being equal, choose the car that's in better condition (rust, interior, steering/suspension, etc.).
