RE: noob question about kompressors

Welcome to the forum.

In answer to your question: nope.

Kompressor means SUPERcharged, not turbocharged.

RE: noob question about kompressors

From Motoring magazine:

'What’s the “Kompressor badge on that C200 all about? A supercharger is one way of improving engine efficiency, and therefore the power output of an engine. The supercharger uses a ‘Kompressor’ or compressor, driven by the engine’s crankshaft, to literally force-feed the combustion chambers with the air-fuel mixture. This fills the cylinder spaces more completely and produces a much bigger output, as opposed to a naturally aspirated induction system (as in the C180’s engine) which has to (rather weakly) suck the mixture in.'

RE: noob question about kompressors

You can still make improvements, even with a supercharger, but the engine will respond differently to modifications than a naturally-aspirated engine will.

For instance, cylinder head porting doesn't have as much of an effect on a supercharged car. Since the air is being forced into the engine under pressure, you don't have to "port and polish" the intake runners to "coax" the air in. They can, however, still benefit from less-restrictive intakes, as well as intercoolers or aftercoolers.

You can still raise the static compression ratio for more performance, but you can't raise it as far without running into pinging problems because the supercharger is already increasing the dynamic compression significantly.

Nitrous works fine on supercharged engines, and the cooling effect of the expanding nitrous oxide actually offsets some of the temperature increase from the supercharger compressing the air.

The simplest improvement for supercharged engines comes from changing the pulley ratio to get more boost from the supercharger. By fitting either a smaller supercharger pulley or a larger crankshaft pulley, the supercharger will generate more boost for a given engine RPM. You still have to keep the boost levels reasonable, or else you'll run into pinging/detonation and overheating, though.
